حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا خَارِجَةُ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ، وَكَانَ، أَكْبَرَ مِنْ زَيْدٍ قَالَ خَرَجْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَلَمَّا وَرَدَ الْبَقِيعَ فَإِذَا هُوَ بِقَبْرٍ جَدِيدٍ فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا فُلاَنَةُ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَعَرَفَهَا وَقَالَ ‏

"‏ أَلاَ آذَنْتُمُونِي بِهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالُوا كُنْتَ قَائِلاً صَائِمًا فَكَرِهْنَا أَنْ نُؤْذِيَكَ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ فَلاَ تَفْعَلُوا لاَ أَعْرِفَنَّ مَا مَاتَ فِيكُمْ مَيِّتٌ مَا كُنْتُ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِكُمْ إِلاَّ آذَنْتُمُونِي بِهِ فَإِنَّ صَلاَتِي عَلَيْهِ لَهُ رَحْمَةٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ أَتَى الْقَبْرَ فَصَفَّنَا خَلْفَهُ فَكَبَّرَ عَلَيْهِ أَرْبَعًا

Kharijah bin Zaid bin Thabit narrated that Yazid bin Thabit, who was older than Zaid, said:

“We went out with the Prophet (ﷺ) and when we reached Al-Baqi’, we saw a new grave. He asked about it and they said: ‘(It is) so-and-so (a woman).’ He recognized the name and said: ‘Why did you not tell me about her?’ They said: ‘You were taking a nap and you were fasting, and we did not like to disturb you.’ He said: ‘Do not do that; I do not want to see it happen again that one of you dies, while I am still among you, and you do not tell me, for my prayer for him is a mercy.’ Then he went to the grave and we lined up in rows behind him, and he said four Takbir (i.e. for the funeral prayer).”

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan Ibn Majah

قَوْله ( كُنْت قَائِلًا ) مِنْ الْقَيْلُولَة أَيْ نِصْف النَّهَار ( لَا أَعْرِفَن ) أَيْ هَذَا الْفِعْل مِنْكُمْ يُرِيد تَأْكِيد النَّهْي عَنْ الْعَوْد إِلَى مِثْله أَيْ إِنَّكُمْ إِنْ فَعَلْتُمْ هَذَا فَقَدْ عَرَفْت مِنْكُمْ هَذَا وَالْحَال أَنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ أَعْرِف مِنْكُمْ مِثْله وَفِي بَعْض النُّسَخ لَأَعْرِفَن أَيْ لَأَعْرِفَن مَا قُلْتُمْ حَقّ لَكِنْ لَا تَفْعَلُوا بِسَبَبِهِ مِثْل مَا فَعَلْتُمْ قَوْله ( مَا كُنْت بَيْن أَظْهُركُمْ ) أَيْ مَا دُمْت حَيًّا ( فَإِنَّ صَلَاتِي عَلَيْهِ رَحْمَة ) أَخَذَ مِنْ هَذَا الْخُصُوص مَنْ لَا يَقُول بِالصَّلَاةِ عَلَى الْقَبْر.…

I heard Ash-Shu`bi saying, "I was told by a man who had passed with the Prophet (p.b.u.h) by a grave that was separate from the other graves that he (the Prophet (ﷺ) ) led them in the prayer and they prayed behind him." I said, "O Abu `Amr! Who narrated that to you?" He replied, "Ibn `Abbas."
