أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِي مُرَّةَ مَوْلَى عَقِيلٍ أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ هُوَ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو عَلَى عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ وَذَلِكَ الْغَدَ أَوْ بَعْدَ الْغَدِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْأَضْحَى فَقَرَّبَ إِلَيْهِمْ عَمْرٌو طَعَامًا فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ فَقَالَ عَمْرٌو أَفْطِرْ فَإِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأَيَّامَ الَّتِي كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُنَا بِفِطْرِهَا وَيَنْهَانَا عَنْ صِيَامِهَا فَأَفْطَرَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَأَكَلَ وَأَكَلْتُ مَعَهُ

Authentic Sunan Abu Dawud 2418

Eat. He said: I am fasting. 'Amr said: Eat, these are the days on which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to command us to break fast, and forbid us to keep fast. The narrator Malik said: These are the day of al-tashriq (i.e. 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah).

كُلْ فَهَذِهِ الأَيَّامُ الَّتِي كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَأْمُرُنَا بِإِفْطَارِهَا وَيَنْهَانَا عَنْ صِيَامِهَا

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (RAA) narrated. ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has prohibited fasting on two days; the day of Fitr (breaking the fast of Ramadan) and on the day of sacrifice ('Idul Adha).’ Agreed upon.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Habban from al-Araj from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade fasting on two days - the day of the Id al-Fitr and the day of the Id al-Adha.

وَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَبَّانَ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى عَنْ صِيَامِ يَوْمَيْنِ يَوْمِ الْفِطْرِ وَيَوْمِ الأَضْحَى ‏.‏

Authentic Sunan Abu Dawud 2416

I attended the 'Id (prayer) along with 'Umar. He offered prayer before the sermon. He then said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited fasting on these two days. As regards Id al-Adha, you eat the meat of your sacrificial animals. As for 'Id al-Fitr, you break (i.e. end) your fast.

صِيَامِ هَذَيْنِ الْيَوْمَيْنِ أَمَّا يَوْمُ الأَضْحَى فَتَأْكُلُونَ مِنْ لَحْمِ نُسُكِكُمْ وَأَمَّا يَوْمُ الْفِطْرِ فَفِطْرُكُمْ مِنْ صِيَامِكُمْ ‏.‏
