Chapter: Whoever cuts short As-Salat (the prayer) on hearing the cries of a child.

حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ بِلاَلٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ، يَقُولُ مَا صَلَّيْتُ وَرَاءَ إِمَامٍ قَطُّ أَخَفَّ صَلاَةً وَلاَ أَتَمَّ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، وَإِنْ كَانَ

لَيَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَيُخَفِّفُ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ تُفْتَنَ أُمُّهُ‏.‏

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

I never prayed behind any Imam a prayer lighter and more perfect than that behind the Prophet (ﷺ) and he used to cut short the prayer whenever he heard the cries of a child lest he should put the child's mother to trial.

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani — Fath al-Bari

قَوْلُهُ : ( حَدَّثَنِي شَرِيك بْن عَبْد اللَّه ) أَيْ اِبْن أَبِي نَمِرٍ , وَالْإِسْنَاد كُلّه مَدَنِيُّونَ غَيْر خَالِدٍ فَهُوَ كُوفِيّ سَكَنَ الْمَدِينَةَ. قَوْلُهُ : ( أَخَفَّ صَلَاة وَلَا أَتَمَّ ) إِلَى هُنَا أَخْرَجَ مُسْلِم مِنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ , مِنْ رِوَايَةِ إِسْمَاعِيل بْن جَعْفَر عَنْ شَرِيك , وَوَافَقَ سُلَيْمَان بْن بِلَال عَلَى تَكْمِلَتِهِ أَبُو ضَمْرَة عِنْدَ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيِّ. قَوْلُهُ : ( فَيُخَفِّفُ بَيَّنَ مُسْلِم فِي رِوَايَةِ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ مَحَلّ التَّخْفِيف وَلَفْظه " فَيَقْرَأُ بِالسُّورَةِ الْقَصِيرَةِ " وَبَيَّنَ اِبْن أَبِي شَيْبَة مِنْ طَرِيقِ عَبْد اَلرَّحْمَن بْن سَابِط مِقْدَارهَا وَلَفْظه " أَنَّهُ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَرَأَ فِي الر…

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When I start the prayer I intend to prolong it, but on hearing the cries of a child, I cut short the prayer because I know that the cries of the child will incite its mother's passions."

لأَدْخُلُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ إِطَالَتَهَا، فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ، فَأَتَجَوَّزُ فِي صَلاَتِي مِمَّا أَعْلَمُ مِنْ شِدَّةِ وَجْدِ أُمِّهِ مِنْ بُكَائِهِ ‏"
