Narrator:Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar

حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، عَنْ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏

إِذَا وُضِعَ عَشَاءُ أَحَدِكُمْ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَابْدَءُوا بِالْعَشَاءِ، وَلاَ يَعْجَلْ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ مِنْهُ ‏"‏‏.‏ وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يُوضَعُ لَهُ الطَّعَامُ وَتُقَامُ الصَّلاَةُ فَلاَ يَأْتِيهَا حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ، وَإِنَّهُ لَيَسْمَعُ قِرَاءَةَ الإِمَامِ‏.‏

Narrated Nafi`:

Ibn `Umar said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'If the supper is served for anyone of you and the Iqama is pronounced, start with the supper and don't be in haste (and carry on eating) till you finish it." If food was served for Ibn `Umar and Iqama was pronounced, he never came to the prayer till he finished it (i.e. food) in spite of the fact that he heard the recitation (of the Qur'an) by the Imam (in the prayer).

قَوْله فِي حَدِيث اِبْن عُمَر ( إِذَا وُضِعَ عَشَاء أَحَدكُمْ ) هَذَا أَخَصُّ مِنْ الرِّوَايَة الْمَاضِيَة حَيْثُ قَالَ " إِذَا وُضِعَ الْعَشَاء " فَيُحْمَل الْعَشَاء فِي تِلْكَ الرِّوَايَة عَلَى عَشَاء مَنْ يُرِيد الصَّلَاة , فَلَوْ وُضِعَ عَشَاء غَيْره لَمْ يَدْخُل فِي ذَلِكَ , وَيَحْتَمِلُ أَنْ يُقَال بِالنَّظَرِ إِلَى الْمَعْنَى : لَوْ كَانَ جَائِعًا وَاشْتَغَلَ خَاطِره بِطَعَامِ غَيْرِهِ كَانَ كَذَلِكَ , وَسَبِيلُهُ أَنْ يَنْتَقِل عَنْ ذَلِكَ الْمَكَان أَوْ يَتَنَاوَلَ مَأْكُولًا يُزِيل شُغْلَ بَاله لِيَدْخُلَ فِي الصَّلَاة وَقَلْبُهُ فَارِغٌ , وَيُؤَيِّد هَذَا الِاحْتِمَال عُمُومُ قَوْله فِي رِوَايَة مُسْلِم مِنْ طَرِيق أُخْرَى عَنْ عَائِشَة " لَا صَلَاة بِحَضْرَةِ طَعَامٍ " الْحَدِيثَ…

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When the supper is served to any one of you and the prayer also begins. (in such a case) first take supper, and do not make haste (for prayer) till you have (taken the food).

If the Iqāmah for prayer is proclaimed, and the dinner is served, start with the dinner

‘Ā'ishah, ‘Abdullāh ibn 'Umar, and Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If the Iqāmah for prayer is proclaimed, and the dinner is served, start with the dinner."

أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ وَحَضَرَ الْعَشَاءُ فَابْدَءُوا بِالْعَشَاءِ ‏"

Authentic Sunan Ibn Majah 934

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘If food is served and the Iqamah for prayer is given, then start with the food.” He said: "Ibn 'Umar ate dinner one night while he could hear the Iqamah."
