Narrator:Abdullah ibn Mas‘ūd

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏{‏

إِذَا كُنْتُمْ ثَلاَثَةً فَلاَ يَتَنَاجَى رَجُلاَنِ دُونَ الآخَرِ، حَتَّى تَخْتَلِطُوا بِالنَّاسِ، أَجْلَ أَنْ يُحْزِنَهُ‏}‏‏.‏

Narrated `Abdullah:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When you are three persons sitting together, then no two of you should hold secret counsel excluding the third person until you are with some other people too, for that would grieve him."

Reported by Al-Bukhari (No. 6290) and Muslim (No. 2184a).

قَوْله ( عَنْ عَبْد اللَّه ) هُوَ اِبْن مَسْعُود. قَوْله ( فَلَا يَتَنَاجَى ) فِي رِوَايَة الْكُشْمِيهَنِيّ بِجِيمٍ لَيْسَ بَعْدهَا يَاء وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَ بَيَانه قَبْل بَاب. قَوْله ( حَتَّى تَخْتَلِطُوا بِالنَّاسِ ) أَيْ يَخْتَلِط الثَّلَاثَة بِغَيْرِهِمْ. وَالْغَيْر أَعَمّ مِنْ أَنْ يَكُون وَاحِدًا أَوْ أَكْثَر فَطَابَقَتْ التَّرْجَمَة , وَيُؤْخَذ مِنْهُ أَنَّهُمْ إِذَا كَانُوا أَرْبَعَة لَمْ يَمْتَنِع تَنَاجِي اِثْنَيْنِ لِإِمْكَانِ أَنْ يَتَنَاجَى الِاثْنَانِ الْآخَرَانِ , وَقَدْ وَرَدَ ذَلِكَ صَرِيحًا فِيمَا أَخْرَجَهُ الْمُصَنِّف فِي " الْأَدَب الْمُفْرَد " وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ وَصَحَّحَهُ اِبْن حِبَّان مِنْ طَرِيق أَبِي صَالِح عَنْ اِبْن عُمَر رَفَعَهُ " قُلْت فَإِنْ كَانُوا أَرْبَعَة ؟ قَا…

ِ‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you are three, then two should not converse privately with the exclusion of the third, until more people join you, because that would grieve him."

إِذَا كُنْتُمْ ثَلاَثَةً فَلاَ يَتَنَاجَى اثْنَانِ دُونَ الآخَرِ حَتَّى تَخْتَلِطُوا بِالنَّاسِ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنْ يُحْزِنَهُ ‏"

“When three of you get together in company, two of you must not talk privately while isolating the third, so as not to make him feel sad (that he is left out) till you mingle with other people (i.e. you are joined by others).” Agreed upon and the wording is from Muslim.
