حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ الْحَبَشُ يَلْعَبُونَ بِحِرَابِهِمْ،

فَسَتَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ، فَمَا زِلْتُ أَنْظُرُ حَتَّى كُنْتُ أَنَا أَنْصَرِفُ فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ تَسْمَعُ اللَّهْوَ‏.‏

Narrated 'Urwa:

Aisha said, "While the Ethiopians were playing with their small spears, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) screened me behind him and I watched (that display) and kept on watching till I left on my own." So you may estimate of what age a little girl may listen to amusement.

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani — Fath al-Bari

قَوْله ( حَدَّثَنَا هِشَام ) هُوَ اِبْن يُوسُف الصَّنْعَانِيُّ. قَوْله ( قَدْر الْجَارِيَة الْحَدِيثَة السِّنّ ) أَيْ الْقَرِيبَة الْعَهْد بِالصِّغَرِ , وَقَدْ بَيَّنْت فِي شَرْح الْمَتْن فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ يَوْمئِذٍ بِنْت خَمْس عَشْرَة سَنَة أَوْ أَزْيَد , وَوَقَعَ عِنْد مُسْلِم مِنْ رِوَايَة عَمْرو بْن الْحَارِث عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ " الْجَارِيَة الْعَرِبَة " وَهِيَ بِفَتْحِ الْمُهْمَلَة وَكَسْرِ الرَّاء بَعْدهَا مُوَحَّدَة , وَتَقَدَّمَ تَفْسِيره فِي صِفَة الْجَنَّة مِنْ بَدْء الْخَلْق.…

"Umar came in when the Ethiopians were playing in the masjid. Umar, may Allah (SWT) be pleased with him, rebuked them, but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Let them be there, O Umar, for they are Banu Arfidah.'"

'A'isha reported that some Abyssinians came and gave a demonstration of armed fight on the 'Id day in the mosque. The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) invited me (to see that fight). I placed my head on his shoulder and began to see their sport till it was I who turned away from watching them.
