حَدَّثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بِشْرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ لَمَّا قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْمَدِينَةَ

وَجَدَ الْيَهُودَ يَصُومُونَ عَاشُورَاءَ، فَسُئِلُوا عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالُوا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي أَظْفَرَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ عَلَى فِرْعَوْنَ، وَنَحْنُ نَصُومُهُ تَعْظِيمًا لَهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ نَحْنُ أَوْلَى بِمُوسَى مِنْكُمْ ‏"‏‏.‏ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِصَوْمِهِ‏.‏

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

When the Prophet (ﷺ) arrived at Medina he found that the Jews observed fast on the day of 'Ashura'. They were asked the reason for the fast. They replied, "This is the day when Allah caused Moses and the children of Israel to have victory over Pharaoh, so we fast on this day as a sign of glorifying it." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "We are closer to Moses than you." Then he ordered that fasting on this day should be observed.

قَوْله : ( لَمَّا قَدِمَ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَة وَجَدَ الْيَهُود يَصُومُونَ عَاشُورَاء ) اُسْتُشْكِلَ هَذَا لِأَنَّ قُدُومه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّمَا كَانَ فِي رَبِيع الْأَوَّل , وَأُجِيب بِاحْتِمَالِ أَنْ يَكُون عِلْمه بِذَلِكَ تَأَخَّرَ إِلَى أَنْ دَخَلَتْ السَّنَة الثَّانِيَة , قَالَ بَعْض الْمُتَأَخِّرِينَ يَحْتَمِل أَنْ يَكُون صِيَامهمْ كَانَ عَلَى حِسَاب الْأَشْهُر الشَّمْسِيَّة فَلَا يَمْتَنِع أَنْ يَقَع عَاشُورَاء فِي رَبِيع الْأَوَّل وَيَرْتَفِع الْإِشْكَال بِالْكُلِّيَّةِ , هَكَذَا قَرَّرَهُ اِبْن الْقَيِّم فِي " الْهَدْي " قَالَ وَصِيَام أَهْل الْكِتَاب إِنَّمَا هُوَ بِحِسَابِ سَيْر الشَّمْس. قُلْت : وَمَا اِدَّعَاهُ مِنْ رَفْع الْإِ…

It is the day on which Allah granted victory to Moses and (his people) Bani Isra'il over the Pharaoh and we observe fast out of gratitude to Him. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: We have a closer connection with Moses than you have, and he commanded to observe fast on this day.

نَحْنُ أَوْلَى بِمُوسَى مِنْكُمْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَأَمَرَ بِصَوْمِهِ ‏.‏

This hadith has been narrated by Ibn Bishr with the same chain of transmitters (but with a slight variation) that he (the Holy Prophet) inquired of them (Jews) about it (fasting on the day of 'Ashura).

The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered a man from the tribe of Bani Aslam to announce amongst the people that whoever had eaten should fast the rest of the day, and whoever had not eaten should continue his fast, as that day was the day of 'Ashura' .
