حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ قَالَتْ

فُرِضَتِ الصَّلاَةُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ هَاجَرَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَفُرِضَتْ أَرْبَعًا، وَتُرِكَتْ صَلاَةُ السَّفَرِ عَلَى الأُولَى‏

Narrated `Aisha:

Originally, two rak`at were prescribed in every prayer. When the Prophet (ﷺ) migrated (to Medina) four rak`at were enjoined, while the journey prayer remained unchanged(i.e. two rak`at).

قَوْله : ( فُرِضَتْ الصَّلَاة رَكْعَتَيْنِ ) أَيْ بِمَكَّة وَقَوْله " تُرِكَتْ " أَيْ عَلَى مَا كَانَتْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ عَدَم وُجُوب الزَّائِد , بِخِلَافِ صَلَاة الْحَضَر فَإِنَّهَا زِيدَتْ فِي ثَلَاث مِنْهَا رَكْعَتَانِ , فَالْمَعْنَى أُقِرَّتْ صَلَاة السَّفَر عَلَى جَوَاز الْإِتْمَام وَإِنْ كَانَ الْأَحَبّ الْقَصْر , وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَ مَا فِيهِ مِنْ الْإِشْكَال فِي أَوَّل كِتَاب الصَّلَاة. قَوْله : ( تَابَعَهُ عَبْد الرَّزَّاق عَنْ مَعْمَر ) وَصَلَهُ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيّ مِنْ طَرِيق فَيَّاض بْن زُهَيْر عَنْ عَبْد الرَّزَّاق بِلَفْظِهِ , وَذَكَرَ اِبْن جَرِير عَنْ الْوَاقِدِيّ أَنَّ الزِّيَادَة فِي صَلَاة الْحَضَر كَانَتْ بَعْد قُدُوم النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَة بِشَهْر…

Narrated 'Aishah (RA) that when the Salat (prayer) was first prescribed, it consisted of two Rak'at. Afterwards, the prayer during travelling was confirmed (as two Rak'at), while the prayer at the place of residence was completed (as four Rak'at). [Agreed upon].

When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went out on a journey of three miles or three Farasikh, he (ﷺ) used to pray two Rak'at. [Reported by Muslim]. Farasikh (plural of Farsakh) is Persian unit of distance. Farsakh is equal to about three miles.

I prayed along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) four rak'ahs at the noon prayer at Medina and two rak'ahs at the afternoon prayer in Dhu al-Hulaifah.
