The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe I‘tikāf [spiritual retirement in the mosque] during each Ramadan for ten days. The year in which he died, he observed I‘tikāf for twenty days.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي حَصِينٍ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم

يَعْتَكِفُ فِي كُلِّ رَمَضَانَ عَشْرَةَ أَيَّامٍ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْعَامُ الَّذِي قُبِضَ فِيهِ اعْتَكَفَ عِشْرِينَ يَوْمًا‏.‏

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to observe I‘tikāf during each Ramadan for ten days. The year in which he died, he observed I‘tikāf for twenty days.

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to confine himself to the mosque to worship Allah for ten days in each Ramadan, particularly the middle ten nights of the month, with the hope that he would observe Laylat al-Qadr [Night of Decree] in those days. When he knew that the Night of Decree was in the last ten nights, he confined himself during those ten nights. The year in which he died, he secluded himself for twenty days to worship Allah Almighty more, and to get even closer to Him.

Explanation in Arabic

كان النبيُّ -عليه الصلاة والسلام- يلزمُ المسجدَ مُنقطِعَاً لعبادة الله في كل رمضان عشرة أيامٍ، وكان يعتكف في العشر الأوسط منه رجاء إدراك ليلة القدر، فلما عَلِمَ أنها في العشر الأواخر منه اعتكفها، ثم اعتكف في العام الذي ماتَ فِيهِ عِشرين يوماً زيادة في الطاعة والتقرب لله تعالى .

  • جواز الاعتكاف أكثر ِمن عشرة أيام وقبل العشر الأواخر من رمضان.
  • حرص النبِي -عليه السلام- على اعتكاف العشر الأواخر من رمضان.
  • مشروعية الازدياد من الطاعة والعبادة في آخر العمر ليختم للعبد بخير.

Gabriel used to repeat the recitation of the Qur'an with the Prophet (ﷺ) once a year, but he repeated it twice with him in the year he died. The Prophet (ﷺ) used to stay in I`tikaf for ten days every year (in the month of Ramadan), but in the year of his death, he stayed in I`tikaf for twenty days.
