حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، عَنْ أَبِي عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم

صَلَّى عَلَى النَّجَاشِيِّ، فَكُنْتُ فِي الصَّفِّ الثَّانِي أَوِ الثَّالِثِ‏.‏

Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer in absentia for the Negus, and I was in either the second or the third row.

Explanation

Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) informs in this Hadīth that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer in absentia for the Negus, and he was amongst those who joined this prayer; however, he does not remember whether he was in the second or the third row, in case he is the one in doubt, and not a sub-narrator.

Explanation in Arabic

يخبر جابر بن عبدالله رضي الله عنهما أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صلى على النجاشي صلاة الغائب، وأنه كان ممن صلى إلا أنه لا يذكر هل كان في الصف الثاني أو الثالث؟ هذا إذا كان الشك منه، ولم يكن من الراوي.

  • مشروعية الصلاة على الميت،؛ لأنها شفاعة ودعاء من إخوانه المصلين.
  • مشروعية الصلاة على الغائب، والحديث ليس على إطلاقه، بل يخص بمن لم يصل عليه.
  • فضيلة كثرة المصلين، وكونهم ثلاثة صفوف.
  • فضيلة النجاشي -رضي الله عنه-.

Abu Hurairah (RAA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) informed the people about the death of Negus the day he died. He took them out to the place of prayer, to offer the funeral prayer for him. He arranged them in rows, and made Takbir four times.’ Agreed upon.

that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) informed them (i.e. his companions) of the death of Negus, the king of Ethiopia, on the very day on which the latter died, and said, "Ask Allah's Forgiveness for your brother"
