Narrator:Ibn ‘Abbās

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، وَحُصَيْنٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ

أَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ يَقْصُرُ، فَنَحْنُ إِذَا سَافَرْنَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ قَصَرْنَا، وَإِنْ زِدْنَا أَتْمَمْنَا‏.‏

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) once stayed for nineteen days and prayed shortened prayers. So when we travel led (and stayed) for nineteen days, we used to shorten the prayer but if we traveled (and stayed) for a longer period we used to offer the full prayer.

Explanation in Arabic

أخبر ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أقام تسعة عشر يومًا بلياليها وهو يقصر الصلاة الرباعية، وذلك في فتح مكة، في السنة الثامنة من الهجرة، لأنه لم يكن مُجمِعًا للإقامة، بل متى تهيأ له فراغ حاجته رجع، على قول جمهور العلماء، والقول الآخر ما قال ابن عباس: فإذا سافرنا نحن وأقمنا تسعة عشر يومًا قصرنا الصلاة الرباعية، وذلك عند توقع الحاجة يومًا فيومًا، وإذا زدنا في الإقامة على تسعة عشر يومًا أكملنا الصلاة أربعًا، مع مخالفة رواية ابن عباس لرواية أنس في المرفوع، قال: خرجنا مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم من المدينة إلى مكة فكان يصلي ركعتين ركعتين حتى رجعنا إلى المدينة، قلت: أقمتم بمكة شيئا؟ قال: أقمنا بها عشرًا. .

قَوْله : ( عَنْ عَاصِم ) هُوَ اِبْن سُلَيْمَان , وَحُصَيْن بِالضَّمِّ هُوَ اِبْن عَبْد الرَّحْمَن. قَوْله : ( تِسْعَة عَشَر ) أَيْ يَوْمًا بِلَيْلَتِهِ , زَادَ فِي الْمَغَازِي مِنْ وَجْه آخَر عَنْ عَاصِم وَحْده " بِمَكَّة " , وَكَذَا رَوَاهُ اِبْن الْمُنْذِر مِنْ طَرِيق عَبْد الرَّحْمَن بْن الْأَصْبَهَانِيّ عَنْ عِكْرِمَة , وَأَخْرَجَهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْه بِلَفْظِ " سَبْعَة عَشَر " بِتَقْدِيمِ السِّين , وَكَذَا أَخْرَجَهُ مِنْ طَرِيق حَفْص بْن غِيَاث عَنْ عَاصِم قَالَ وَقَالَ عَبَّاد اِبْن مَنْصُور عَنْ عِكْرِمَة " تِسْع عَشْرَة " كَذَا ذَكَرَهَا مُعَلَّقَة , وَقَدْ وَصَلَهَا الْبَيْهَقِيُّ. وَلِأَبِي دَاوُدَ أَيْضًا مِنْ حَدِيث عِمْرَان بْن حُصَيْنٍ " غَزَوْت مَعَ رَسُول اللَ…

Narrated 'Aishah (RA) that when the Salat (prayer) was first prescribed, it consisted of two Rak'at. Afterwards, the prayer during travelling was confirmed (as two Rak'at), while the prayer at the place of residence was completed (as four Rak'at). [Agreed upon].

When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went out on a journey of three miles or three Farasikh, he (ﷺ) used to pray two Rak'at. [Reported by Muslim]. Farasikh (plural of Farsakh) is Persian unit of distance. Farsakh is equal to about three miles.

I prayed along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) four rak'ahs at the noon prayer at Medina and two rak'ahs at the afternoon prayer in Dhu al-Hulaifah.

صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الظُّهْرَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ أَرْبَعًا وَالْعَصْرَ بِذِي الْحُلَيْفَةِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ‏.‏

Allah, the Exalted, prescribed prayer for you, through the tongue of your Prophet (ﷺ), four rak'ahs while resident, two rak'ahs while travelling and one rak'ah in time of danger.
