حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، - وَهَذَا حَدِيثُهُ وَهُوَ أَتَمُّ - عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ، عَنْ تَمِيمِ بْنِ طَرَفَةَ الطَّائِيِّ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ، - قَالَ عُثْمَانُ - قَالَ

دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْمَسْجِدَ فَرَأَى فِيهِ نَاسًا يُصَلُّونَ رَافِعِي أَيْدِيهِمْ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ - ثُمَّ اتَّفَقَا - فَقَالَ ‏"‏ لَيَنْتَهِيَنَّ رِجَالٌ يَشْخَصُونَ أَبْصَارَهُمْ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ -

Jabir b. Samurah said(this is the version of the narrator ‘Uthman):

The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) entered the mosque and saw there some people praying raising their hand towards the heaven. (This Is the common version: ) He said : People must stop raising their eyes to the heaven. The narrator Musaddad said: During prayer, otherwise their sight will be taken away.

Reported by Abu Dawud (No. 912).

Classical commentary

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( وَهَذَا حَدِيثه ) : أَيْ حَدِيث عُثْمَان ( وَهُوَ أَتَمّ ) : أَيْ مِنْ حَدِيث مُسَدَّد ( قَالَ عُثْمَان ) : أَيْ زَادَ عُثْمَان فِي رِوَايَته دَخَلَ رَسُول اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَسْجِد إِلَى قَوْله إِلَى السَّمَاء , وَلَمْ يَزِدْ هَذَا الْكَلَام مُسَدَّد فِي رِوَايَته , فَلِذَلِكَ صَارَ حَدِيث عُثْمَان أَتَمّ مِنْ حَدِيث مُسَدَّد ثُمَّ اِتَّفَقَ أَيْ مُسَدَّد وَعُثْمَان ( فَقَالَ لَيَنْتَهِيَنَّ رِجَال ) : اللَّام جَوَاب الْقَسَم وَفِيهِ أَنَّ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ لَا يُوَاجِه أَحَدًا بِمَكْرُوهٍ بَلْ إِنْ رَأَى أَوْ سَمِعَ مَا يَكْرَه عُمَر , كَمَا قَالَ مَا بَال أَقْوَام يَشْتَرِطُونَ شُرُوطًا , لَيَنْتَهِيَنَّ أَقْوَام عَنْ كَذَا ( يُشْخ…

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "People should certainly stop lifting their gaze to the sky when they supplicate during the prayer, or they will lose their eyesight."
