حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُسْلِمٍ - عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏

إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدُهُمْ فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ ‏"

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When one of the Jews greets you saying: Death may come upon you, reply: The same to you.

Abu Dawud said: Malik b. 'Adb Allah b. Dinar transmitted it in a similar manner, and al-Thawri transmitted it from 'Abd Allah b. Dinar. He said in this version: The same to you.

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( فَإِنَّمَا يَقُول السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ ) : أَيْ بِالْأَلِفِ وَمَعْنَاهُ الْمَوْتُ الْعَاجِلُ ( فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ ) : قَالَ النَّوَوِيّ فِي شَرْح صَحِيح مُسْلِم : قَدْ جَاءَتْ الْأَحَادِيث الَّتِي ذَكَرَهَا مُسْلِمٌ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَلَيْكُمْ بِإِثْبَاتِ الْوَاوِ وَحَذْفِهَا , وَأَكْثَر الرِّوَايَات بِإِثْبَاتِهَا , وَعَلَى هَذَا فِي مَعْنَاهُ وَجْهَانِ : أَحَدهمَا : أَنَّهُ عَلَى ظَاهِره فَقَالُوا عَلَيْكُمْ الْمَوْت فَقَالَ وَعَلَيْكُمْ أَيْضًا أَيْ نَحْنُ وَأَنْتُمْ فِيهِ سَوَاءٌ وَكُلُّنَا نَمُوتُ. وَالثَّانِي : أَنَّ الْوَاو هَهُنَا لِلِاسْتِئْنَافِ لَا لِلْعِطْفِ وَالتَّشْرِيك وَتَقْدِيره وَعَلَيْكُمْ مَا تَسْتَحِقُّونَهُ مِنْ الذَّمِّ , وَأَمَّا مَنْ حَذَفَ الْوَاو فَتَقْدِيره بَلْ…

When the Jews offer you salutations, some of them say as-Sam-u-'Alaikum (death be upon you). You should say (in response to it): Let it be upon you.

الْيَهُودَ إِذَا سَلَّمُوا عَلَيْكُمْ يَقُولُ أَحَدُهُمُ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقُلْ عَلَيْكَ ‏"
