حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، حَدَّثَنَا عَنْبَسَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم

يَسْتَنُّ وَعِنْدَهُ رَجُلاَنِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الآخَرِ فَأُوحِيَ إِلَيْهِ فِي فَضْلِ السِّوَاكِ ‏"‏ أَنْ كَبِّرْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ أَعْطِ السِّوَاكَ أَكْبَرَهُمَا ‏.‏

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was using the tooth-stick, when two men, one older than the other, were with him. A revelation came to him about the merit of using the tooth-stick. He was asked to show proper respect and give it to the elder of the two.

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( يَسْتَنّ ) : بِفَتْحِ أَوَّله وَسُكُون الْمُهْمَلَة وَفَتْح الْمُثَنَّاة وَتَشْدِيد النُّون : مِنْ السِّنّ بِالْكَسْرِ أَوْ الْفَتْح , إِمَّا ; لِأَنَّ السِّوَاك يَمُرّ عَلَى الْأَسْنَان أَوْ لِأَنَّهُ يَسُنّهَا , أَيْ يُحَدِّدهَا يُقَال : سَنَنْت الْحَدِيد , أَيْ حَكَكْته عَلَى الْحَجَر حَتَّى يَتَحَدَّد , وَالْمِسَنّ بِكَسْرِ الْمِيم الْحَجَر الَّذِي يُمَدُّ عَلَيْهِ السِّكِّين. وَحَاصِل الْمَعْنَى أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَسْتَاك ( أَنْ كَبِّرْ ) : بِصِيغَةِ الْأَمْر نَائِب فَاعِل أَوْحَى , أَيْ أَوْحَى إِلَيْهِ أَنَّ فَضْل السِّوَاك وَحَقّه أَنْ يُقَدِّم مَنْ هُوَ أَكْبَرُ. وَمَعْنَى كَبِّرْ , أَيْ قَدِّمْ الْأَكْبَر سِنًّا فِي إِعْطَاء السِّوَاك. قَالَ الْعُلَمَاء : فِيهِ تَقْدِيم ذِي السِّنّ ف…

‘A'isha said that God’s messenger was using the tooth-stick when two men, one older than the other, were with him. A revelation came to him about the excellence of the tooth-stick in which he was told to show proper respect, and give it to the older of the two. Abu Dawud transmitted it.
