حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَوْنٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبِي يَا بُنَىَّ لَوْ

رَأَيْتَنَا وَنَحْنُ مَعَ نَبِيِّنَا صلى الله عليه وسلم وَقَدْ أَصَابَتْنَا السَّمَاءُ حَسِبْتَ أَنَّ رِيحَنَا رِيحُ الضَّأْنِ ‏.‏

Narrated Abu Burdah:

My father said to me: My son, if you had seen us while we were with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and the rain had fallen on us, you would have thought that our smell was the smell of the sheep.

Classical commentary

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( يَا بُنَيّ ) : بِضَمِّ الْبَاء وَفَتْح النُّون وَشَدَّة الْيَاء ( لَوْ رَأَيْتنَا إِلَى قَوْله قَدْ أَصَابَتْنَا السَّمَاء ) : أَيْ لَوْ رَأَيْتنَا حَال كَوْننَا مَعَ رَسُول اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَحَال كَوْننَا قَدْ أَصَابَتْنَا السَّمَاء , فَالْجُمْلَتَانِ وَقَعَتَا حَالَيْنِ مُتَرَادِفَيْنِ أَوْ مُتَدَاخِلَيْنِ ( حَسِبْت أَنَّ رِيحنَا رِيح الضَّأْن ) : أَيْ لِمَا عَلَيْنَا مِنْ ثِيَاب الصُّوف وَأَحَادِيث الْبَاب تَدُلّ عَلَى جَوَاز لُبْس الصُّوف وَالشَّعْر. قَالَ الْحَافِظ فِي الْفَتْح قَالَ اِبْن بَطَّال : كَرِهَ مَالِك لُبْس الصُّوف لِمَنْ يَجِد غَيْره لِمَا فِيهِ مِنْ الشُّهْرَة بِالزُّهْدِ لِأَنَّ إِخْفَاء الْعَمَل أَوْلَى. قَالَ : وَلَمْ يَنْحَصِر التَّوَاضُع فِي…

"O my son! If you saw us when we were with the Prophet(s.a.w) and the sky poured upon us, you would think that our smell was the smell of sheep." The meaning of this Hadith is that their garments were of wool, so when the rain fell upon them, the smell coming from their clothes was that of sheep.

وَأَصَابَتْنَا السَّمَاءُ لَحَسِبْتَ أَنَّ رِيحَنَا رِيحُ الضَّأْنِ ‏.‏

يَا بُنَىَّ لَوْ شَهِدْتَنَا وَنَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ إِذَا أَصَابَتْنَا السَّمَاءُ لَحَسِبْتَ أَنَّ رِيحَنَا رِيحُ الضَّأْنِ ‏.‏
