I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the top of his leather socks

‘Abd Khayr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If the religion was based on reason, the wiping over the sock would be done underneath rather than the on the top. يَمْسَحُ عَلَى ظَاهِرِ خُفَّيْهِ ‏.‏

Narrated by Ali Explained

If the religion were based on opinion, it would be more important to wipe over the under parts of the leather socks than the upper, but I have seen Allah’s Messenger (rad) wiping over the upper parts of his leather socks. [Reported by Abu Da’ud with good Isnad (chain of narrators)].

Narrated by Ali

‘Ali said, “If the religion were based on opinion, it would be more important to wipe the under part of the shoe than the upper, but I have seen God’s messenger wiping over the upper part of his shoes.” Abu Dawud transmitted it, and Darimi has something similar.
