حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الطَّالْقَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْعَتَكِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏"

‏ الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ لَمْ يُوتِرْ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ لَمْ يُوتِرْ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ فَمَنْ لَمْ يُوتِرْ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا ‏"

Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib:

I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: The witr is a duty, so he who does not observe it does not belong to us; the witr is a duty, so he who does not observe it does not belong to us; the witr is a duty, so he who does not observe it does not belong to us.

( الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ ) قَالَ الْخَطَّابِيُّ : مَعْنَى هَذَا الْكَلَامِ التَّحْرِيضُ عَلَى الْوِتْرِ وَالتَّرْغِيبُ فِيهِ ( فَمَنْ لَمْ يُوتِرْ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا ) : مَعْنَاهُ مَنْ لَمْ يُوتِرْ رَغْبَةً عَنْ السُّنَّةِ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا , وَقَدْ دَلَّتْ الْأَخْبَارُ الصَّحِيحَةُ عَلَى أَنَّهُ لَمْ يُرِدْ بِالْحَقِّ الْوَاجِبَ الَّذِي لَا يَسَعُ غَيْرَهُ , مِنْهَا خَبَرُ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ لَمَّا بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ أَبَا مُحَمَّد مِنْ الْأَنْصَار يَقُولُ إِنَّ الْوِتْرَ حَقٌّ فَقَالَ كَذَبَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد ثُمَّ رَوَى عَنْ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي عَدَدِ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسِ , وَمِنْهَا خَبَرُ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ فِي سُؤَال الْأَعْرَابِيِّ , وَمِنْهَا خَبَرُ أَنَس…

The Witr prayer is not obligatory as the prescribed prayer is [i.e. the five daily prayers], but it is a Sunnah which was established by the practice of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). [at-Tirmidhi and an-Nasa'i reported it, who graded it Hasan (good). al-Hakim graded it Sahih (authentic)].
