Biography of Abdelali Anoun

Abdelali Anoun, a Moroccan Quran reciter of many talents

With a pure voice and an engaging style of recitation, he has long experience in the field of Quranic readings and in calling people to Allah as an imam, Friday preacher and religious counselor. He studied the Islamic sciences in the traditional way while also embracing modern training in fields such as computer science and aviation. He has held important positions and released outstanding books and Quranic recordings. This is the reciter Sheikh Abdelali Anoun, whose full name is Abdelali bin Tahar Anoun, born on January 1, 1947, in Fez, Morocco.

Sheikh Abdelali Anoun began his pursuit of knowledge by studying under a number of distinguished sheikhs and scholars, among them Sheikh Moulay Cherif Alaoui Omar Mohsen, who taught him tajweed; Sheikh Driss Jai, who taught him the Arabic language and the science of hadith; and Sheikh Mohamed Rafii, from whom he learned Quranic exegesis and the principles of jurisprudence. He crowned this successful path of study by obtaining an ijazah in reciting the Holy Quran in the narration of Warsh from Nafi’ through the Shatibiyyah route, that is, through the routes of al-Azraq and al-Asbahani, with an unbroken chain of transmission going back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Alongside his religious studies, Sheikh Anoun trained himself in other areas of professional life, earning more than twenty national and international certificates in various fields, including civil aviation and computer science. His intellectual and scientific interests did not keep him from calling people to Allah with good counsel and gentle exhortation: for more than twenty years he has preached and given religious guidance in several mosques in Morocco, Europe and Canada. He has also held a number of positions, working as a tajweed teacher in several public and private institutions, as a supervisor in many mosques and associations, and as a judge on the panels of various Quran competitions. As a crowning achievement of this rich career, he received the endorsement of Morocco’s Council of Ulema to deliver Friday sermons.

As for his printed, audiovisual and audio works, Sheikh Anoun has published important books and manuscripts on the Quranic readings in their various narrations. He has also produced audio and video recordings of several complete Quran recitations in his moving voice and with masterful delivery, which are now available on CD and online. It is worth noting that Sheikh Abdelali Anoun speaks three languages fluently: Arabic, French and English.
