أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ جَدِّي، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي شُعَيْبُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الأَوْزَاعِيِّ، وَابْنِ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ ‏

"‏ أَلاَ لاَ تَقَدَّمُوا الشَّهْرَ بِيَوْمٍ أَوِ اثْنَيْنِ إِلاَّ رَجُلٌ كَانَ يَصُومُ صِيَامًا فَلْيَصُمْهُ ‏"

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah used to say:

"Do not fast one or two days ahead of the month, unless the one who used to observe a regular fast. In that case let him fast." '

The month is thus and thus. (He then withdrew his thumb at the third time). He then said: Fast when you see it, and break your fast when you see it, and if the weather is cloudy calculate it (the months of Sha'ban and Shawwal) as thirty days.
