Read Surat Al-Hijr with Tafsir and Translation

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

الر تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ وَقُرْآنٍ مُبِينٍ [١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur'an.

Verse number: 1

رُبَمَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَوْ كَانُوا مُسْلِمِينَ [٢]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims.

Verse number: 2

ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا وَيُلْهِهِمُ الْأَمَلُ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ [٣]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.

Verse number: 3

وَمَا أَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَعْلُومٌ [٤]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.

Verse number: 4

مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ [٥]

Translation: English - Sahih International

No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter.

Verse number: 5

وَقَالُوا يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِي نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ [٦]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And they say,"O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.

Verse number: 6

لَوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِالْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ [٧]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"

Verse number: 7

مَا نُنَزِّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوا إِذًا مُنْظَرِينَ [٨]

Translation: English - Sahih International

We do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved.

Verse number: 8

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ [٩]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.

Verse number: 9

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ فِي شِيَعِ الْأَوَّلِينَ [١٠]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples.

Verse number: 10

وَمَا يَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ [١١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.

Verse number: 11

كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ [١٢]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Thus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals.

Verse number: 12

لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ الْأَوَّلِينَ [١٣]

Translation: English - Sahih International

They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.

Verse number: 13

وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ بَابًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَظَلُّوا فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ [١٤]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,

Verse number: 14

لَقَالُوا إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَارُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَسْحُورُونَ [١٥]

Translation: English - Sahih International

They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."

Verse number: 15

وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِي السَّمَاءِ بُرُوجًا وَزَيَّنَّاهَا لِلنَّاظِرِينَ [١٦]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.

Verse number: 16

وَحَفِظْنَاهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ رَجِيمٍ [١٧]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah ]

Verse number: 17

إِلَّا مَنِ اسْتَرَقَ السَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ مُبِينٌ [١٨]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame.

Verse number: 18

وَالْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَاهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ وَأَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مَوْزُونٍ [١٩]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.

Verse number: 19

وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَايِشَ وَمَنْ لَسْتُمْ لَهُ بِرَازِقِينَ [٢٠]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.

Verse number: 20

وَإِنْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا عِنْدَنَا خَزَائِنُهُ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَعْلُومٍ [٢١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known measure.

Verse number: 21

وَأَرْسَلْنَا الرِّيَاحَ لَوَاقِحَ فَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمُوهُ وَمَا أَنْتُمْ لَهُ بِخَازِنِينَ [٢٢]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers.

Verse number: 22

وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْيِي وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ الْوَارِثُونَ [٢٣]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.

Verse number: 23

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ [٢٤]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come].

Verse number: 24

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ إِنَّهُ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ [٢٥]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing.

Verse number: 25

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ [٢٦]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.

Verse number: 26

وَالْجَانَّ خَلَقْنَاهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ مِنْ نَارِ السَّمُومِ [٢٧]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.

Verse number: 27

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ [٢٨]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.

Verse number: 28

فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ [٢٩]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."

Verse number: 29

فَسَجَدَ الْمَلَائِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ [٣٠]

Translation: English - Sahih International

So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,

Verse number: 30

إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ [٣١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Except Iblees, he refused to be with those who prostrated.

Verse number: 31

قَالَ يَا إِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ [٣٢]

Translation: English - Sahih International

[ Allah ] said, O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?"

Verse number: 32

قَالَ لَمْ أَكُنْ لِأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ [٣٣]

Translation: English - Sahih International

He said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud."

Verse number: 33

قَالَ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ [٣٤]

Translation: English - Sahih International

[ Allah ] said, "Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled.

Verse number: 34

وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ اللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ [٣٥]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."

Verse number: 35

قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنْظِرْنِي إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ [٣٦]

Translation: English - Sahih International

He said,"My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."

Verse number: 36

قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنْظَرِينَ [٣٧]

Translation: English - Sahih International

[ Allah ] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved

Verse number: 37

إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْوَقْتِ الْمَعْلُومِ [٣٨]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Until the Day of the time well-known."

Verse number: 38

قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ [٣٩]

Translation: English - Sahih International

[Iblees] said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all

Verse number: 39

إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِينَ [٤٠]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Except, among them, Your chosen servants."

Verse number: 40

قَالَ هَٰذَا صِرَاطٌ عَلَيَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌ [٤١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

[ Allah ] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight.

Verse number: 41

إِنَّ عِبَادِي لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَانٌ إِلَّا مَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْغَاوِينَ [٤٢]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Indeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators.

Verse number: 42

وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ [٤٣]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all.

Verse number: 43

لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَابٍ لِكُلِّ بَابٍ مِنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَقْسُومٌ [٤٤]

Translation: English - Sahih International

It has seven gates; for every gate is of them a portion designated."

Verse number: 44

إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ [٤٥]

Translation: English - Sahih International

Indeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs.

Verse number: 45

ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَامٍ آمِنِينَ [٤٦]

Translation: English - Sahih International

[Having been told], "Enter it in peace, safe [and secure]."

Verse number: 46

وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِمْ مِنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَانًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُتَقَابِلِينَ [٤٧]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.

Verse number: 47

لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُمْ مِنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ [٤٨]

Translation: English - Sahih International

No fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed.

Verse number: 48

نَبِّئْ عِبَادِي أَنِّي أَنَا الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ [٤٩]

Translation: English - Sahih International

[O Muhammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful.

Verse number: 49

وَأَنَّ عَذَابِي هُوَ الْعَذَابُ الْأَلِيمُ [٥٠]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment.

Verse number: 50

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَنْ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ [٥١]

Translation: English - Sahih International

And inform them about the guests of Abraham,
